ATTORNEY -AT – LAW GABRIEL BENN L.LB. (DIST.) is one of the newest members to the local Bar. She was presented by Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde before Justice Naresh Harnanan.
In her maiden pr4esentation to the court, Ms. Benn said, “‘The law is a jealous mistress’ – one of the first things that I heard when I entered the University of Guyana. But I told myself how jealous can a mistress be once you value and spend adequate time with her?”
She said that was what she did while still volunteering to teach young women about leadership and advancing the cause for sexual reproductive rights in Guyana.
“I took an unconventional route in attaining my goal to study law. After graduating at the top of my class at St Joseph High, I had to face the reality that, that was just not enough to get me into the UG Law programme.
“Therefore, I placed all that shame and wounded pride into ensuring I excel in my First Year at the University of Guyana in International Relations to apply to study law a second time.”
When the time came she graduated top in the top 25 of my class at UG and subsequently acquired her Certificate of Legal Education from the Hugh Wooding Law School.
“I envisioned this very moment and I knew I would be standing here at the end of this academic journey. I envisioned myself standing here today, the same day I decided to enter the Arts Stream at St. Joseph High School.
“At that time, I thought I was escaping the world of maths and science only to be faced with them consistently in my everyday work and school life.”
She paid tribute to the many who “always poured love and encouragement into me. They have seen me at my lowest and my highest.”
She would have preferred to pursue humanitarian law, but “these aspirations lie beyond the borders of Guyana and extend to our regional and international neighbors.
“Our constitution, our presence in CARICOM and our international borders are contentious issues that need more young minds to tackle them.”
Ms. Benn said that she wants to tackle the reality of “enforcing the laws and treaty of CARICOM
and their effectiveness in truly bringing forth regional integration.”
