A house fire that killed three children in Mocha may have been triggered by an electrical problem, the Guyana Fire Service said Thursday.
According to a statement released by the Fire Service, the department received a call at 1:25 hours and was alerted to a fire at 10 Field Barnwell Mocha, East Bank Demerara.
Two water Tenders, #95 from the Diamond Fire Station and #107 from the West Ruimveldt Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the scene.
The first water tender arrived on the location at 1:42 am but was unable to access the home, which was already engulfed by the fire, due to the deplorable state of the dam, GFS explained.
The three children were trapped in the burning, one-flat wooden building, at the time, while their mother, Tracy Flue, a security guard, was at work.
The fire destroyed the house, killing eight-year-old Timothy Kippins, six-year-old Triston Kippins, and one-year-old Zhalia Flue.
The Guyana Fire Service expressed its sympathies to the family of the children and urged citizens to take the necessary precautions to prevent fire emergencies.
President Irfaan Ali and several other officials on Thursday afternoon, met with the grieving mother and her relatives at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, Georgetown.
Meanwhile, Flue’s abusive ex-boyfriend, who had threatened to harm her and her children, has been taken into police custody. Cedric Dey was arrested hours after the Guyana Police Force issued a wanted bulletin for him.
He is reportedly being questioned in relation to the fire.
